The Wordless Book

The Wordless Book

When children have never seen a Bible, how do you share the message? One way is to teach them using The Wordless Book. Y-Malawi partner Fishers, Trainers and Sending does just that. This tool is being used in Kids Clubs that host nearly 5,000 children each month.

The children have fun making a colorful bracelet. Sometimes they are made of cloth, sometimes of beads, sometimes of yarn. Then together they learn what the colors mean.

  • Black represents sin – they learn that all have sinned (Romans 3:23)
  • Red represents blood – Jesus blood covers our sins (1 John 1:7)
  • White represents purity – Jesus washes away our sins (Psalm 51:7)
  • Yellow represents heaven – when we believe, Jesus give eternal life (John 14:2)
  • Green represents growth – our job is to grow in the knowledge of the Lord (2 Peter 3:18)

In this way the children can hear and understand the message of the gospel. Better yet, they can use the The Wordless Book to share with their friends and family about what they have learned. It’s a simple tool that makes a lasting impact.

Reading Corners, Turning the Key

Reading Corners, Turning the Key

Can you imagine a classroom with one teacher and 150 students? Classes of this size are common place in Malawi public schools. With large classes come a lot of distractions. Students get little one on one attention. To make matters worse, materials and resources are often a challenge. So, while students in Malawi are just as bright as students of every other nation, their environment makes learning and educational success a much greater challenge.

Fortunately students in Nkhotakota now have a new weapon against ignorance. Its called Reading Corners. Students come to Reading Corners after school. Volunteers help them with reading, math, and even writing skills. Y-Malawi trains the volunteers, provides chalkboards, reading materials, and other learning aids. It’s fun and there are still a lot of students, but the results have been dramatic. 13 year old 4th grade student Anafi was so excited he could hardly contain himself when he said, “In the past I was performing poorly, but last term I managed to scoop position 2 in my classes!”

It is often said that “Education is the key to ones future,” but a key is only good in the hands of someone that knows what it can be used for. Reading Corners is giving kids a chance to know how to turn the key that can change their lives.

Can the church change the world?

Can the church change the world?

Do you believe the church can change the world? We do. In an area called Nkhotakota Y-Malawi partners have brought together 70 village churches of all denominations. They are putting aside man made boundaries and coming together to work in concert for the cause of Christ. They know that together they can make a difference in their communities as they demonstrate the love of Jesus.

The first order of business is to teach basic Bible doctrine. None of these pastors has formal Biblical training. Most don’t even have a Bible. With the help of Veritas College they are learning the truth embedded in God’s Word. Some have never heard this truth before. Others have heard some, but the truth has been mixed with long standing cultural practices. Like light in a dark room, this education is enabling these pastors to see a world they never even knew existed.

Upon graduation they each received a certificate and a new Bible. One pastor said, “Now I have the word of God in my home. My home…can you believe it? I do not feel worthy. Now I can use this new knowledge to prepare sermons and help others in my church and community to know what God says to them. This is the greatest gift of my life. I never expected something so great as this.”

Now armed with the knowledge of truth, these churches are going into their communities and demonstrating the love of Jesus. They are building fences, planting trees, helping widows, starting schools. Others are noticing. Since the first graduating class these churches have grown in attendance by an average of 40%.

None of this would be possible without those who support us financially. So, can the church change the world? It already has.

Let the Children Come to Me

Let the Children Come to Me

Her mother died of HIV/Aids last year. Her name is Shakira. Before her mother died she was sponsored through Y-Malawi’s program to empower women and girls. While alive, Mom received food and proper medical care to extend her life. The Father left long ago, so this help enabled Mother to care for her five children.

When Mom died the Y-Malawi team was right there by her side, praying and comforting. Y-Malawi paid for her funeral and proper burial. Now Shakira and the other children are staying with their Grandmother. She is elderly and can hardly care for them. The good news is that Y-Malawi has not left the children alone. This picture was taken while a Field Representative was delivering food. Shakira wears the only clothes she has. Her bother is in the background.

When they realized what was happening the entire village came to thank the Y-Malawi team. They sang songs of praise to God for what He is doing through Y-Malawi. They sang songs of praise to God for what He is doing for this family and for the people of their entire community.

Jesus cared for vulnerable children like Shakira, He calls us to do the same. Want to sponsor someone like Shakira? It’s easy, just click the button below learn more.

Chief Chatanga’s Story

Chief Chatanga’s Story

A Chief is like a king. In the village the Chief makes all decisions. He or she (there are women Chiefs) will approve your marriage. They tell you where you can build a house. They settle disputes in the village. They handle those that break the law. Nothing happens in the village without the Chiefs knowledge. They are very powerful.

This is the story of Chief Chatanga, he is pictured here with his wife.  Born into a family that follows Islam, through the Chiefs Ministry of Y-Malawi, Jesus has been calling to Chief Chatanga and his family. Not long ago he became a follower of Jesus. As a new Christian, Chief Chatanga is holding and attending Bible Studies. When his friends came to ask why he is no longer attending prayers he replied, “You should be led as you wish, but for me, I must follow my heart’s desire and that is now Jesus.”

Others are now coming to follow Jesus too. It’s because of the leadership and testimony of Chief Chatanga. God is using the Chiefs Ministry and Y-Malawi to not only change the lives of Chiefs, but of entire communities.

What will you be?

What will you be?

For the majority of girls in Malawi, life does not have a lot of choices. You may get the chance to go to elementary school, but less than 3% of girls ever graduate high school. Most families expect girls to learn to cook, gather wood and water, take care of children and work in the fields. Before age 18, half of Malawi’s girls are already married. 84% of births (that are recorded) are from teen mothers. Most girls have few dreams. They accept the idea that their fate has already been set for them by someone else. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

For almost 2 years now Y-Malawi has been working to empower women and girls in the community of Nkhotakota. It is one of the poorest districts in Malawi. During that time nearly 500 girls have been rescued from early marriage. Some of those girls have gone back to school. The fuel that is powering this program is sponsorship. 50 some girls are now attending high schools. Y-Malawi is paying their school fees, providing schooling supplies and even helping with food and lodging for those who must travel long distances to class.

But is all of this really making a difference? Are girls really being empowered?  Are lives really changing? To find out we visited some of the girls at their school. We asked them a just one question. What do you want to do when you finish school? Frankly, the answers surprised even us. Not one of the girls gave thought to not going on to college. They have big dreams. Their goals included airline pilot, lawyer, doctor, even President!

These are the women that will impact the future of Malawi. They will influence not just the course of their own lives, but those of their families, churches, communities and nation. It won’t happen overnight, it may even take a generation, but it is happening, and we feel blessed to be a part of it.
